What we make

Nine kinds of garden staircase, all in steel.

Every one designed to your levels, fabricated in our workshop, professionally painted and fitted. Pick the one that looks like your job, or just send us a photo.

Green powder-coated straight garden staircase with a platform, fitted to a brick house

Straight staircases

One clean flight from a terrace, deck or doorway down to the garden. Professionally painted in your colour, chequer-plate treads, handrail one or both sides.

Black spiral staircase with vertical bar balustrade rising from a courtyard to a first-floor terrace

Spiral staircases

The smallest footprint. From a first-floor terrace, balcony or roof garden to the ground in about two square metres. Painted black is the classic.

Black helical steel staircase with yellow tread nosings curving up to a first-floor landing on a brick building

Curved & helical

A sweep instead of a corner. Fabricated in sections with a continuous handrail for gardens where the staircase is on show.

Grey powder-coated external staircase with a mid-level platform on a flint cottage

Split-level

Two or more flights with landings for steep or long slopes, so the route up the garden is comfortable, not a ladder.

Basement & lightwell

External stairs from ground level down to a basement flat or courtyard, built to the balustrade rules for the drop.

Black quarter-turn staircase with a landing leading to a lower garden and door

Quarter-turn & dog-leg

A turn with a square landing where a straight flight won't fit or where you want to arrive facing the garden.

Complex & bespoke

Multi-flight, cantilevered or combined with platforms and retaining walls. If it's steel and it climbs, we can draw it.

Also from the same workshop

All types of metalwork to go with it.

If your staircase needs a balcony to land on or a balustrade to meet, we make that too, in the same finish so it all matches.

Balconies

Steel balconies and Juliet balconies, professionally painted to match, with glass or bar infill.

Balustrades

Vertical bar, horizontal rail, mesh or glass, to Building Regulations heights.

Handrails

Wall-mounted and post-mounted handrails for steps, ramps and paths.

Railings & gates

Boundary railings, side gates and driveway gates in matching steel.

Platforms & walkways

Landings, access platforms and walkways for awkward levels.

Finishes

Professionally painted. Built for weather.

Every staircase is professionally spray painted in our workshop after fabrication: primed, then finished in the colour you choose. Black and anthracite are the usual choices, and any RAL colour is available to match windows, railings or a designer's scheme. Hot-dip galvanising and powder coating are available where a project calls for them.

Treads are steel chequer plate as standard, or perforated for drainage. If your landscaper is supplying oak or stone treads, we design the steel structure to take them.

Quick answers

Before you ask.

Do I need planning permission?

Usually not for steps and staircases within your own garden, and a staircase from an existing terrace or balcony counts as part of it. Listed buildings, conservation areas and flats can be different. We check at the survey.

Can it really be fitted in a week?

For a straightforward staircase, yes: survey, drawing, fabrication and painting can be turned round in about a week. Complex designs and galvanising add time, and we'll give you a date at the quote stage.

What does a staircase cost?

Straight painted flights start at a few thousand pounds; spirals, split-levels and curved designs cost more. Our cost guide gives ranges for each type.
